Jannik Sinner won his first Grand Slam title on Sunday at the Australian Open after overcoming a two-set deficit to beat Daniil Medvedev, 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3.

His journey to victory was not easy. The fourth-seeded Sinner beat No. 5 Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals, then upset 10-time Australian Open champion and No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic in the semifinals.

At age 22, Sinner is the youngest men’s player to win the Australian Open since Djokovic won his first title there in 2008 at 21.

The Italian became the first men’s tennis player outside of the big three—Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer—to win the Australian Open since 2014.

Tennis players from around the world and spanning generations congratulated Sinner on social media shortly after the match ended.

One of those players included Australian tennis legend Rod Laver, for whom the tournament’s primary venue is named.
