Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn would love to bring back Man of Steel star Henry Cavill for a live action adaptation of the DC Elseworlds story, Superman: Red Son. Speaking on the Post Credit Podcast, the director declared himself a self-proclaimed “Superman nut” and declared that a Superman: Red Son project would be “interesting,” especially with Cavill back in the cape.

“I thought Red Son was one of the cleverest comics I’d ever read, and the current world we’re living in, it’s certainly become a lot more relevant because ignorance causes more issues, and I think the more we learn about Russia and the Russian history…Wow, could you imagine remaking Red Son with Henry Cavill? That would be an interesting movie…”

Matthew Vaughn has played in the comic book movie sandbox several times before with the likes of X-Men: First Class, Kick-Ass, and the Kingsman franchise, but has yet to helm a major DC project. While the filmmaker has confirmed talks with James Gunn and Peter Safran regarding their new and (hopefully) improved DCU, he has yet to come aboard officially…but perhaps a Superman: Red Son movie would finally convince him.

Gunn has previously confirmed that the franchise will take advantage of the Elseworlds brand, with the likes The Batman falling under that banner. So, should Cavill be interested, could Vaughn bring the critically acclaimed Superman: Red Son to live action life? No doubt those who wish to see Henry Cavill back in the role would be delighted.

Matthew Vaughn has revealed details of his approach to a new Kick-Ass movie.

Superman: Red Son Asks the Question ‘What if Superman Had Been Raised in the Soviet Union?’

Written by Mark Millar (who, of course, also penned the likes of Kick-Ass and Kingsman: The Secret Service), Superman: Red Son was released back in 2003 and asks the question, “What if Superman had been raised in the Soviet Union?” Dropping the presence and power of the Man of Steel amid such political figures as Joseph Stalin and John F. Kennedy and featuring alternate versions of several DC superheroes including Batman and Wonder Woman, Superman: Red Son begins when Kal-EL’s rocket ship lands on a Ukrainian collective farm rather than in Kansas and sees the iconic character raised as a state-sponsored superhero.

Superman: Red Son was met with critical acclaim and is now considered one of the best Superman stories ever told. The alternate tale has been adapted before in animated form back in 2020.

Before Vaughn potentially leaps over to the DCU, he will first direct Henry Cavill in the spy comedy, Argylle. Featuring an all-star cast that includes Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, Dua Lipa, Ariana DeBose, John Cena, and Samuel L. Jackson alongside Cavill, Argylle follows an introverted novelist, Elly Conway, who is drawn into the real world of espionage when the plots of her books get a little too close to the activities of a sinister underground syndicate.

Argylle is scheduled to be released on February 2, 2024, by Universal Pictures and Apple Original Films.
