Celebrated author R.L. Stine has confirmed that Fear Street 4 is going into production at Netflix. While the streaming giant did confirm that a new movie was in the works back in November 2023, at the time it wasn’t made clear which book would be adapted from Stine’s ‘Fear Street‘ series of novels for young adults. The first trilogy of Fear Street movies (Fear Street 1994, 1978, and 1666), were not adapted from any Stine book in particular, but rather featured elements from the acclaimed series, but this time around it seems as if Netflix is interested in making a standalone film.

In a post shared on X, R.L. Stine confirmed the good news, and revealed which book Netflix will be adapting for the fourth installment in its R-rated series. “It’s based on my Fear Street book, The Prom Queen,” he said. Check out his full post below:

Upon sharing the news of a fourth Fear Street movie back in November, Netflix’s Head of Film, Scott Stuber, released a statement that explained that the film would be a standalone predecessor to the original trilogy. He said at the time that they were still trying to nail down the script, but that the film would a great extension to the franchise:

“Obviously, there’s a lot of books. There’s one standalone that we’re working on right now that we’re once again trying to get the script right, but I like it very much, and so does the team. So I feel like if we can get that script right there would be a great kind of extension of that franchise.”

Released in July 2021, the original Fear Street trilogy of films focused on a group of teens that worked together to bring down an evil force that had been plaguing their town for centuries. The films starred Kiana Madeira, Olivia Scott Welch, Benjamin Flores Jr., Sadie Sink, Maya Hawke, and Ted Sutherland. At the time of their releases, each film was met with critical praise, with many lauding them as effective slasher films that brought something smart to the genre.

With the news that Fear Street 4 will be based on Stine’s novel, ‘The Prom Queen,’ it’s possible to gauge what the film we be about if Netflix decides to stick close to the source material. The book follows Lizzie McVay, a prom queen candidate at Shadyside High School. When her four competitors start dropping dead around her, it’s up to Lizzie to determine who’s next, and stop the killer before she becomes a victim herself.

First released in 1992, ‘The Prom Queen‘ is Stine’s 15th book in his ‘Fear Street‘ saga, which features more than 50 books in the series. There’s no word on whether any of the original cast will return for the new movie, and a release date has not been set yet. With production underway, though, there’s a good chance that Fear Street 4 will be released later in 2024 barring any unforeseen circumstances.
