Summary

  • Crew member Juan Osorio tragically passed away after falling from a catwalk on the set of Marvel Studios’ Wonder Man.
  • Marvel and the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) expressed their condolences and are supporting the investigation into the accident.
  • Six people, including Osorio, have died on set while filming or working since 2020, highlighting the need for improved safety measures.

Juan ‘Spike’ Osorio, a crew member working on Marvel Studios’ upcoming Wonder Man, passed away after falling from a catwalk on set. The tragic accident took place on Tuesday at the CBS Radford Studios lot in Studio City. Osorio, a rigger who lived in Temple City, CA., was 41. According to Deadline, which first reported the news, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed the death and identified the victim as Juan Carlos Osorio. Wonder Man was not filming at the time of the incident.

In a statement, a Marvel spokesperson shared:

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family and friends, and our support is behind the investigation into the circumstances of this accident.”

The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), Osorio’s union, also shared a message (via social media) following Osorio’s death:

“Everyone in the IATSE family is shocked and deeply saddened by this tragic loss. We are working to support our member’s family and his fellow members and colleagues. Safety on set is our highest priority and we will assist [authorities] in their investigation in any way that we can.”

Since 2020, six people, including Osorio, have died on set while filming or working. This includes three crew members’ deaths on the set of the upcoming vigilante action film Indian 2; cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who died after Alec Baldwin fired a live round from a prop gun on the set of Rust; actor Ryan Fellows who died during a race for the reality series Street Outlaws: Fastest in America; and Osorio.

According to a report from E! News, an LAPD spokesperson said that no foul play is suspected, but an investigation is ongoing.

On Wednesday, Osorio’s friends created a GoFundMe fundraiser to assist his widow with unforeseen bills. They shared:

“On Feb. 6, 2024, our friend Spike lost his life on the set of Marvel’s ‘Wonder Man’ shoot at [Radford Studio Center] due to a potential structural failure. We are hoping the production company, the facility, MBS, Marvel Studios handles things properly, but expect a long road fraught with attorney fees and expenses. In the meantime, bills will be mounting and the widow, boom operator Joanne W., will be left to deal with everything. Help if you’re able, it’s greatly appreciated.”

The fundraiser has amassed over $125,000 in donations and is quickly growing; the goal is listed at $150,000.

Wonder Man, an upcoming Disney+ series set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has faced some delays due to last year’s Writers Guild of America and Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists strikes. The series was expected to go into full production in March. At the time, no information has been released on whether Osorio’s passing would delay the start of filming.

Wonder Man stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman) as Simon Williams, a Hollywood actor thrust into the world of superheroes as he gets his own powers. Academy Award-winning actor Ben Kingsley also stars as actor Trevor Slattery, reprising his role from Iron Man 3. Mindhunter’s Lauren Grazier also appears in an undisclosed role.

No expected premiere date has been announced for Wonder Man. It will air on Disney+.
