Argylle actor John Cena is hopeful about the spy thriller leading to multiple sequels and spinoffs. Directed by Matthew Vaughn, Argylle tells the story of introverted novelist Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard) as her real life begins to parallel the events of her popular spy novels. While the film primarily focuses on Elly falling into the world of espionage in the real world, the story also brings sequences from Elly’s novels to life, featuring the adventures of Agent Argylle (Henry Cavill) and his allies Wyatt (Cena) and Keira (Ariana DeBose), and the enigmatic LaGrange (Dua Lipa).

While speaking with Looper, Cena discussed the possibility of future sequels and spinoffs. There is already source material for stories that would focus more on Agent Argylle, as the first of several Argylle novels was published this past January, focusing on the exploits of the eponymous spy. This aligns with Vaughn wanting to tell this story in a film tentatively titled Book One, which would be made before Aryglle 2. Read Cena’s comments below:

I hope the world says yes, and that’s going to mean them going to see “Argylle” and enjoying “Argylle.” I do know Matthew Vaughn has a plan, and I hope he’s able to execute that plan. I think he’s got more than a movie in his mind, so I hope audiences around the world enjoy “Argylle” and I hope we can get the band back together.

Why Argylle’s Sequels & Spinoffs May Not Happen

Despite Vaughn’s ambitious plan and Cena’s enthusiasm, Argylle bombing at the box office and its lackluster critical reception may prevent any future sequels or spinoffs from happening. Argylle cost $200 million to make, but only earned $18 million domestically and $35 million worldwide during its opening weekend. Unless its box office picks up dramatically in the coming weeks, the movie will not break even, let alone make a profit, proving to be a misfire for both Apple and Universal despite being one of February’s most high-profile theatrical releases.

Some films that performed poorly during their opening weekends, including Pixar’s Elemental, have been able to make enormous strides at the box office in later weeks, largely thanks to positive reviews and good word of mouth. Between scathing reviews and a current critical score of 34% on Rotten Tomatoes, Argylle is unlikely to enjoy the rebound that Elemental and other initial box office disappointments have experienced.

Elemental grossed nearly $500 million worldwide even though it only made $29.5 million domestically and $44.5 million worldwide in its opening weekend.

If Vaughn manages to get the chance to do a sequel, his franchise may still have a chance of panning out, though. A sequel focused on the origins of Agent Argylle adapted from the already-published novel may find more mainstream appeal, especially given the enormous popularity of Cavill. This sequel likely won’t happen unless Argylle‘s box office improves significantly, as studios are unlikely to invest in future content met with exceedingly poor financial and critical reception.
