Fool Me Once on Netflix chronicles the death of a woman’s husband, who then spots him days after his funeral, and it all takes place in England (where it was also conveniently filmed). The 2024 British mystery thriller television series is based on Harlan Coben’s 2016 book of the same name but changes the story’s location from New York to the fictional town of Winhurst in northern England. All eight episodes of the show’s first season debuted in January 2024, and it quickly jumped to the top of the Netflix charts as subscribers decided to celebrate the new year with a bit of murder and mystery.

The cast of Fool Me Once includes Michelle Keegan as Maya Stern, Richard Armitage as Joe Burkett, Adeel Akhtar as Detective Sergeant Sami Kierce, Joanna Lumley as Judith Burkett, Marcus Garvey as Eddie Walker, Emmett J. Scanlan as Shane Tessier, Dino Fetscher as Marty McGreggor, Hattie Morahan as Caroline Burkett, James Northcote as Neil Burkett, Natalie Anderson as Claire Walker, Daniel Burt as Daniel Walker, Danya Griver as Abby Walker, Laurie Kynaston as Corey Rudzinski, Joe Armstrong as Alexander Dosman, and Clara Indrani as Molly Sardana. The British cast and crew traveled around England to capture the scenes for the show’s eight episodes, including three particular spots in the country.

Manchester, England

One of the primary filming locations for Netflix’s Fool Me Once was the city of Manchester in England. Manchester is one of the bigger cities in England, with the town and its metropolitan borough’s population being around 552,000 as of the 2021 census. However, Manchester’s greater urban area (which includes the cities of Manchester and Salford and the metropolitan boroughs of Tameside, Trafford, Bury, Oldham, and Stockport) is the third biggest in the country, with a population of around 2.8 million. Like many other cities in England, Manchester is known for its history but is also notable for its culture, music scene, sports clubs, and more.

Most of the principal photography on Fool Me Once occurred in Manchester, but some specific filming locations are hard to find (except for one). According to Cosmopolitan, the Castlefield Viaduct was one destination in Manchester that the cast and crew used for an intense chase sequence. The Castlefield Viaduct, located in the Castlefield area of Manchester, was built in 1892 and was previously used to carry heavy rail traffic in and out of a local warehouse. The viaduct closed in 1969 but is protected by the government for its historical importance and is now used as a sky park.

Chesire, England

The production team also chose the ceremonial county of Chesire in England for filming Netflix’s Fool Me Once. Chesire is located just south of Greater Manchester, so the producers evidently wanted to keep principal photography contained to one area in the country. The ceremonial county covers 905 square miles (which includes the expansive Chesire Plain) and has a population of 1,095,500 as of the 2021 census.

During an interview with Tudum by Netflix, Richard Armitage, who plays Joe Burkett in Fool Me Once, revealed that he and the cast shot many scenes in and around Arley Hall and Gardens in Chesire. Arley Hall doubled as the Burkett family’s home where Judith lived in the series. Joe and Maya’s wedding scenes were also captured on the country home’s property. Armitage said, “Calling [Arley] a stately home is an understatement. I thought, ‘Oh, they are going to live in quite a nice house,’ but this felt like [the Burketts] are royalty. They really are extremely wealthy.” Meanwhile, a residential property in Alderley Edge in Chesire was used as Maya’s home.

Oldham, England

The final filming location utilized for Fool Me Once on Netflix was the town of Oldham in England. Oldham is northeast of the city of Manchester and is located in the ceremonial county of Greater Manchester. So, as mentioned above, principal photography was limited to one area of England. As of the 2021 census, the town has a population of around 111,000. Oldham was one of the first towns to be industrialized during the Industrial Revolution in England and was the center of the cotton and textile industries in the country, so it has a rich history.

However, for the sake of the 2024 mystery thriller show, the cast and crew used Alexandra Park in Oldham to capture one significant scene. Alexandra Park was established in 1861, covers 57 acres, and contains numerous buildings, statues, a boating lake, and many more historical features. Fool Me Once‘s production team chose the park as the location where Joe was shot.
