What is The Muppet Movie about?

Originally released in 1979, The Muppet Movie is directed by James Frawley and produced by Jim Henson, the creator of the Muppets. The film tells the origin story of the group, and follows Kermit the Frog as he takes part in a cross-country trip to Los Angeles, and encounters several of the more iconic Muppets along the way.

The film starred Frank Oz, Jerry Nelson, Richard Hunt, Dave Goelz, Charles Durning, and Austin Pendleton, and received massive praise upon its release. The Muppet Movie also received two Academy Award nominations for Paul Williams and Kenneth Ascher’s musical score, as well as the song “Rainbow Connection.”

In 2009, the film was deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant” by the Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.
