Stranger Things season 5 will bring the series to an end, and while plot details are still unknown, Gaten Matarazzo’s pitch for what season 5 should be like is exactly what the show needs. After four successful seasons with many adventures, mysteries, and tragedies, Stranger Things is coming to an end with season 5, which has a lot to cover and solve in order to give the show a satisfying ending. Stranger Things season 4 ended on a massive cliffhanger, with the Upside Down taking over Hawkins after Eleven and company couldn’t defeat Vecna.

Stranger Things season 4 solved some of the biggest mysteries of the series, such as who is in control of the Upside Down, but it also left more questions waiting to be answered. The ending of Stranger Things season 4 also implies that season 5 will see more action and tragedies, especially as it is the show’s final season, but the series has a track record of not killing any of its main characters – however, Gaten Matarazzo has suggested that should change in season 5, and it’s exactly what Stranger Things needs.

Gaten Matarazzo Is Right – Stranger Things Season 5 Needs Higher Stakes

Speaking at MEGACON Orlando, Gaten Matarazzo was asked about what changes he would make to Stranger Things if he could, and his answer might be surprising to some. Matarazzo replied (via CBR) that the show should “kill more people” and it would be a lot better if “the stakes were much higher”, meaning that no one would be safe. Matarazzo added that this meant that “any of these kids can kick it” at any moment as he feels they are “all too safe”. Although Stranger Things has killed a couple of characters, some of them quite popular, they have mostly been new characters.

Barb, Bob Newby, Billy, Sergei, and Eddie Munson are the biggest deaths that Stranger Things has seen so far, with only Billy being a character who was introduced the season before his death. Dr. Brenner was killed in Stranger Things season 4, but he already had a death fakeout in season 1 and was somewhat expected to die in season 4 after all the damage he had caused. As for the main characters of Stranger Things, Matarazzo is right in saying they have all been too safe, and the closest they have come to dying was when Max was attacked by Vecna and left in a coma.

Stranger Things season 4 already took the first steps toward higher stakes in the final season with what happened to Max, but that won’t be enough in season 5. Of course, higher stakes in Stranger Things season 5 have to be justified, and the show should avoid going on a killing spree of main characters just for the sake of shocking the audience.

Why Stranger Things Season 5 Needs To Kill More Characters Before The Ending

The main characters of Stranger Things, both adults and teenagers, have gone through a lot in four seasons, facing supernatural and human threats both in the human dimension and the Upside Down. Because of this, it’s somewhat unrealistic that they have all lived this long, and it would be even more if they survived everything that’s to come in season 5. The ending of Stranger Things will surely be powerful no matter what, due to everything the series has built up, but it can be even more powerful and memorable if it sees the death or sacrifice of one or more main characters, either adults or teenagers.

There are already a couple of theories and suggestions of characters who are likely to die in Stranger Things season 5, with Steve, Will, and Eleven being the ones the audience believes have more possibilities of not surviving the season. Whoever ends up dying in Stranger Things season 5, the writers have to make sure their death serves a purpose and it’s not done just because someone had to die.
