Summary

  • Rachel McAdams, the original Regina George, made a surprise appearance on SNL to introduce Reneé Rapp, who plays Regina in the 2024 musical film adaptation of Mean Girls.
  • Megan Thee Stallion, who calls herself the “Black Regina George” in a song, shared a photo with Rapp and McAdams, referring to them as “all the Reginas in one room.”
  • Mean Girls has received positive reviews, with Rapp being praised as the standout star, while McAdams did not appear in the film due to personal reasons.

During a “gruel” moment on the January 20 episode of Saturday Night Live, one Regina George introduced another. Through a surprise appearance, Rachel McAdams, who originated the iconic character in 2004’s Mean Girls, took the SNL stage to introduce musical guest Reneé Rapp ahead of her second performance. Rapp portrays Regina in the 2024 musical film, a role she previously played in the Broadway production of Mean Girls.

Rapp performed “Not My Fault,” a song featured in Paramount’s Mean Girls musical, alongside Megan Thee Stallion. Megan Thee Stallion, who calls herself the “Black Regina George” in the song and makes a cameo appearance in the recent film, later shared a picture of herself alongside Rapp and McAdams (recreating the viral Spider-Man finger-pointing meme) on Instagram, captioned, “Cause huhhh 🥹 all the Reginas in one room.”

In addition to presenting Rapp, McAdams appeared in a sketch alongside the evening’s host, Jacob Elordi. In the skit, she portrayed an actress named Natalie Partman, who closely resembles McAdams.

The original Mean Girls, directed by Mark Waters and written by Tina Fey, has become a pop culture phenomenon since its 2004 release. The film starred Lindsay Lohan, McAdams, Lacey Chabert, Amanda Seyfried, Tim Meadows, Ana Gasteyer, Amy Poehler and Fey. Last year, Lohan, Chabert, Seyfried, and film co-stars Rajiv Surenda and Daniel Franzese, reprised their roles for a Black Friday Walmart commercial. Notably missing was McAdams, who later said she “wasn’t that excited about doing a commercial.”

“A movie sounded awesome, but I’ve never done commercials, and it just didn’t feel like my bag,. Also…I didn’t know that everyone was doing it. I would, of course, always love to be part of a ‘Mean Girls’ reunion and hang with my plastics, but yeah, I found that out later,” she said.

Rapp is impressing critics and audiences with her portrayal of the Queen of the Plastics. The new iteration of the film, adapted from a 2018 Broadway production (that is based on the original movie), has garnered mostly positive reviews, with many citing Rapp as the film’s standout star.

Mean Girls, now in theaters, stars Rapp, Angourie Rice, Busy Philipps, Jon Hamm, Auli’i Cravalho, and Ashley Park, with Tina Fey (who penned the original film and the musical) and Tim Meadows reprising their roles as Ms. Norbury and Mr. Duvall. Just like the 2004 film, it follows the story of Cady Heron (now portrayed by Rice), a previously homeschooled teenager who must learn to navigate life at North Shore High.

Lohan, who starred in the original as Cady, makes a surprise appearance in the new film, but none of the other original Plastics appear. During a previous interview with Entertainment Tonight, McAdams revealed that she and Fey had “dabbled with a few ideas” for McAdams to appear in the movie musical, “but it was tough to make it all work in the end.”

The 2004 version of Mean Girls is currently streaming on Paramount+.
