Labyrinth 2 Gets Clarifying Update After Cult Classic Sequel Was Seemingly Shelved

by extreme hd iptv

  • Brain Henson clarifies that
    Labyrinth 2
is still a project they are excited about, but he suggests speaking with his sister Lisa Henson for more information.
  • Scott Derrickson, who was attached as the director, previously stated that the script couldn’t meet the studio’s expectations.
  • The biggest challenge for a
sequel is finding a suitable replacement for the late David Bowie as the iconic Goblin King Jareth.

Brain Henson, son of the legendary Jim Henson, has offered a clarification about plans for Labyrinth 2 after reports that the project was seemingly set aside. Based on the 1986 classic that starred David Bowie as the Goblin King Jareth, long-gestating plans for a sequel began as early as 2016 when Marvel’s Nicole Perlman was tapped to pen a script alongside Alien: Romulus director Fede Álvarez and Jay Basu. In 2020, Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson replaced Álvarez, though as recently as October last year, he cast doubts on the project’s future, suggesting it had been shelved.

Speaking with ComicBook.com, Henson offered a fresh glimmer of hope for viewers eager to see a return to the Labyrinth world. When asked about the potential sequel, he suggested that it would be better to speak with his sister Lisa Henson, CEO of the Jim Henson Company. However, he confirmed Labyrinth 2 remains a “project that we are very excited about.” Check out his comments below:

Well, that’s a question you have to ask my sister. My sister Lisa, who’s CEO of the Jim Henson Company. That is a project that we are very excited about, but we can’t talk about it.

Henson’s most recent comments come as good news. This update comes after Derrickson stated that he was unable to get the sequel’s script “to a place where the studio wanted to make it.” Sitting alongside the likes of 1982’s The Dark Crystal as one of the most imaginative fantasy movies to come out of the 1980s, Labyrinth fans have long cried out for a return to the world of the Goblin King, even well before the official efforts got underway in 2016.

Labyrinth: The 10 Best Characters, Ranked

The cult classic fantasy film Labyrinth is filled with memorable characters. Everyone from Bowie as the Goblin King to adorable Muppets!

While calls for a Labyrinth sequel would only serve to intensify off the back of 2019’s Netflix series, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, perhaps the biggest hurdle any sequel faces lies in finding a suitable replacement for the late David Bowie. Originally intended to be portrayed by another of Henson’s iconic puppets, the legendary filmmaker later decided it would be best to have a live actor in the role. Before Henson finally settled on Bowie as Jareth, he famously considered the likes of Sting, Mick Jagger, and Michael Jackson as other potential Goblin Kings.

Exactly how Labyrinth 2 could work without Bowie’s Jareth remains to be seen, and finding a suitable replacement will be high on the list of priorities for any filmmaker looking to tackle the project after Derrickson. Considered one of Bowie’s most iconic roles, the late rock star even admitted that he was regularly recognized more for his tenure as Jareth by young audiences than for his illustrious musical career. Whoever is bold enough to try and claim the Goblin King’s throne in Labyrinth 2 will have an incredibly difficult task in proving themselves worthy of the honor.
