Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’s Adam Wingard reviews Godzilla Minus One. Directed by Wingard, Godzilla x Kong is the upcoming entry in the Hollywood MonsterVerse franchise, and is set for release on March 29. Godzilla Minus One is a 2023 Japanese telling of the kaiju monster story, and is entirely separate from the MonsterVerse franchise.

In an interview with Empire, Wingard provides his review of Godzilla Minus One. Wingard left a glowing review of the film, calling it “one of the best Godzilla movies.” He also explained how different Godzilla Minus One is from Godzilla x Kong, noting that audiences will be “seeing all sides” of Godzilla in films that are very “tonally” distinct. Check out the full quote from Wingard below:

It was fantastic. It’s one of the best Godzilla movies I’ve ever seen. Their take on Godzilla is so different than mine. I’m following the later ’60s, 70s Showa pattern, where Godzilla is the hero character. In Minus One, Godzilla reacts in a way that’s metaphorical to what the characters are going through. It’s such a different movie than ours tonally. You’re getting more Godzilla now than ever, but you’re seeing all sides of him. It’s really super-cool.”

Will Godzilla Minus One Help or Hurt Godzilla x Kong

Wingard is far from the only person to sing the praises of Godzilla Minus One. The film was incredibly successful in theaters both in Japan and abroad, grossing over $106 million worldwide. Godzilla Minus One also got glowing reviews, and it currently holds a 98% on Rotten Tomatoes for both the critics and audience score. Godzilla Minus One also released a black-and-white version of the film, called Godzilla Minus One Minus Color that got a theatrical run as well, showing its artistic merit.

Even though they are in separate film universes, Godzilla Minus One’s success could be daunting to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Wingard’s 2021 film Godzilla vs. Kong fared decently among critics, scoring a 76% on Rotten Tomatoes. Still, no MonsterVerse film has yet come anywhere close to the kind of critical acclaim that Godzilla Minus One received, setting the bar high for Godzilla-related content.

Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire – New & Returning Character Guide

Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire will introduce several new characters into the beloved MonsterVerse franchise while bringing back many familiar faces.

At the same time, Godzilla Minus One could increase the brand awareness for the kaiju monster. With Godzilla Minus One having been released just under four months before Godzilla x Kong, audiences will have just either seen Godzilla Minus One or if not, seen ads for it. Even though they are in different franchises, the undiscerning viewer will have the “godzilla” name recognition. This could serve to elevate the box office for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, even if they have a tough act to follow.
