  • Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire will blend old lore with new performances, promising a unique and faith-inspiring New York story.
  • The sequel will feature even more spectacular special effects, including a historical and visually stunning opening sequence.
  • The film will explore deeper themes of loss, betrayal, and forgiveness, making it a more emotional entry in the franchise, while still delivering scares and great effects.

There’s something strange in the neighborhood this spring and there’s still just one team to call. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire will arrive in cinemas this March, bringing back the old and new ‘busters from Ghostbusters Afterlife in an all-new adventure back in the iconic firehouse in New York City. In advance of the franchise’s return to the big screen, Empire Magazine has started teasing their world exclusive Ghostbusters edition, which is released on January 18.

As seen below, the two exclusive covers feature the new Ghostbusting team of Carrie Coon’s Callie Spengler, Finn Wolfhard and Mckenna Grace’s teens Trevor and Phoebe Spengler, and Paul Rudd’s Gary Grooberson on one, and the original, the best, and the only Ghostbusters with Bill Murray’s Peter Venkman, Dan Aykroyd’s Ray Stantz and Ernie Hudson’s Winston Zeddemore being joined in their iconic uniforms by Annie Potts’ Janine Melnitz, who appears to be a fully-fledged member of the team.

The Ghostbusters franchise is set to make its return to the big screen in 2024 after a three-year break following 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and original Ghostbuster, Dan Aykroyd, has promised in a new interview that Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire will be unlike anything we’ve ever seen before from the series. Speaking with Newsweek regarding his new show on The History Channel, The UnBelievable with Dan Aykroyd, the Canadian-born actor was asked about his return to the Ghostbusters franchise after more than 30 years away, and he mentioned how the next generation of actors have given him faith that carrying on the beloved series with Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire was the right move.

“When we marry the old lore and some of the traditions with these four spectacular new performances, you get a blend-in service of a really neat New York story that gives us faith in carrying on with the Ghostbusters concept.”

In 2021, Ghostbusters: Afterlife saw Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, and Paul Rudd being added to the franchise, and it would go on to earn over $200 million dollars at the box office, against a budget of $75 million. Following its success, Aykroyd expressed interest in making more films along with the original surviving cast members, and in June 2022, an official sequel was confirmed. While Ghostbusters: Afterlife featured impressive special effects, Dan Aykroyd promises that Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire will be even more spectacular, especially when it comes to the opening sequence.

“We’ve never done this to Manhattan before…there’s a historical base to it that’s quite beautiful. We took full advantage of CGI technology but we also, where we could, kept old-school effects alive.”

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire will also be adding new cast members to the mix, as Kumail Nanjiani (Obi-Wan Kenobi), comedian James Acaster, and Emily Alyn Lind (The Babysitter) have all been cast in undisclosed roles. The story will take place in New York City rather than the southern setting of the previous film, making Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire a homecoming for the franchise, as it returns to the familiar location of the original two movies.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire Will Be More Emotional Than Previous Films

Reactions to the first teaser trailer (which you can check out below) have been positive, and you can also check out the official synopsis from Sony Pictures below.

“In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the Spengler family decide to leave Summerville, Oklahoma and go back to where it all started – the iconic New York City firehouse – and help the original Ghostbusters, who’ve developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level! But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes a mysterious and evil force, known as the Death Chill, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a deadly and unpredictable fate that unknowingly, could affect earth’s history with a second Ice Age.”

While Ghostbusters: Afterlife took audiences on an emotional roller coaster and dealt with themes of family, friendship, and death, Aykroyd says that Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which wrapped filming earlier this year, will take viewers even deeper with its themes, which deal with loss, betrayal, and forgiveness, making for a film that’s more emotional than prior entries in the franchise. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Ghostbusters movie without some scares, and the 71-year-old actor promises that in addition to the film’s emotional core, we’ll get some frights as well.

“All that, along with some great scares and effects, it’s really going to work.”

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is set to hit theaters on March 22, 2024, and you can watch the trailer below.
