Milly Alcock, the new Supergirl of James Gunn’s DC Universe, has broken a major DC movie record. At the start of January, news broke that CODA‘s Emilia Jones, House of the Dragon‘s Alcock, and DC Tomorrowverse Supergirl voice actress Meg Donnelly would screen test for the role of Kara Zor-El in the DCU. Later, the race to play the popular DC heroine was reported to have boiled down to Alcock and Donnelly. Now, Alcock has been cast as the DCU’s Supergirl.

Alcock will reportedly play a role in Superman: Legacy‘s story, going from her debut in the DCU’s first movie to leading her own solo film — Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Alcock and Gunn have since commented on the news. The actress thanked the DCU creative head for casting her, with Gunn revealing that Alcock was the first name he thought of to play the DCU’s Supergirl, having seen her in House of the Dragon over a year ago. Alcock’s casting is promising for the future of the DCU, and the actress has already started her DC career by breaking a record.

Alcock’s DCU version of Supergirl breaks an interesting record, with the actress being the shortest to portray Kara Zor-El over the DC character’s 40-year live-action history. Before Alcock was cast as the Girl of Steel, multiple talented actresses brought Supergirl to life, with the list including the Arrowverse’s Melissa Benoist, the DCEU’s Sasha Calle, Smallville‘s Laura Vandervoort, and original live-action Supergirl Helen Slater. Alcock is 5’5″, making her the shortest Supergirl actress, while the tallest stars to have played Kara Zor-El are Slater and Benoist, both of whom are 5’8″.
