Chris Rock is taking on a familiar story for his next directorial effort. The actor and comedian is set to helm a remake of the popular, Academy Award-winning Danish film, Another Round, which starred Mads Mikkelsen. Per Deadline, the remake will be produced by Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson for Appian Way while Brad Weston and Collin Creighton will handle producing duties for Makeready. Stuart Bloomberg wrote the first draft of the script, but a new writer will be brought in to work directly with Rock.
The original Another Round is a black comedy directed by Thomas Vinterberg, from a screenplay by Vinterberg and Tobia Lindholm. The movie follows four high school teachers who embark on an experiment to maintain a constant level of intoxication throughout the workday. In addition to Mikkelsen, the film also stars Thomas Bo Larsen, Magnus Millang, and Lars Ranthe.
Another Round was a big critical success, winning the Best International Feature Film Oscar at the 93rd Academy Awards and Vinterberg also landed a Best Director nomination. Chris Rock Is No Stranger to Directing
Rock is no stranger to directing, though he made a couple of stumbles out of the gate. He made his directorial debut helming the 2003 comedy, Head of State. The film, which saw Rock’s Mays Gilliam being picked as a presidential candidate’s replacement following his unexpected passing, was met with negative reviews upon release, registering a 30 percent rotten score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film ultimately grossed $38.6 million worldwide on a $35 million budget.
Rock followed that up with 2007’s I Think I Love My Wife, a remake of the 1972 French film Love in the Afternoon. The film follows a man who daydreams about being with other women and then finds himself tested when he’s visited by the ex-mistress of his old friend. Critics weren’t entirely impressed, as the film stands with a very rotten score of 19 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
For his next effort, Rock saw greater critical success with 2014’s Top Five, a film that he wrote, which saw a comedian trying to make it as a serious actor. The movie scored a big $10 million deal at the 2014 Toronto Film Festival and Rock earned raves for his direction and writing. Top Five drew comparisons to the work of Woody Allen, particularly Stardust Memories, and it secured a fresh rating of 85 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
In addition to directing the Another Round remake, Rock is also attached to an adaptation of King: A Life, a Universal Pictures film based on the Jonathan Eig book about Martin Luther King Jr., and he’s also writing an untitled script that Peter Rice is producing.
