Tourists have been warned not to visit an island in the Caribbean after 65 people were murdered in just a month.
In 2022, more than 231,000 UK visitors headed to Jamaica, more than the previous record of 225,000 in 2019, according to Travel Weekly.
However, the US Embassy in Jamaica has upgraded its travel advisory to a Level Three – “Reconsider travel”. This is just one level below warning tourists against travel altogether.
The warning stated that crime is so rampant that tourists are not even safe in resorts.
The report said: “Violent crimes, such as home invasions, armed robberies, sexual assaults, and homicides, are common. Sexual assaults occur frequently, including at all-inclusive resorts.
“Local police often do not respond effectively to serious criminal incidents. When arrests are made, cases are infrequently prosecuted to a conclusive sentence.
